15. Governing Law

ICF Code of Ethics

Here’s how to weave the International Coaching Federation’s ethical backbone into your Terms without sounding like a legal drone. I’ve broken it down into sections with crisp summaries you can plug right in.

1. Foundational Pillars (Core Values & Ethical Principles)

In 2025, ICF’s Code officially dropped four core values that every coach should embody:

  • Professionalism: Act with responsibility, integrity, respect, and competence. Keep growing.

  • Collaboration: Build partnerships, not hierarchies.

  • Humanity: Stay humble, open to feedback, and kind.

  • Equity: Recognize bias, honor diversity, and treat everyone fairly.
These aren’t optional; they’re the ethical baseline of modern coaching. ICF+1

2. Stepping Up: Commitments for Everyone in the ICF Ecosystem

  • Act with accountability and integrity.

  • Stay ethically woke, inclusive, and self-reflective.

  • Address cultural dynamics, biases, or unethical behavior head-on.
This honors the “do good, not just avoid bad” mindset. ICF+1

3. Ethical Standards for Coaches:

  1. Formalize agreements with clients and sponsors, covering roles, confidentiality, money, cancellation rules, etc. ICFTandem Coaching

  2. Protect confidentiality always—only break it if the law demands it (e.g., harm to self or others). ICF+1

  3. Iron out conflicts of interest. Manage dual relationships or payers vs. coachees clearly and ethically. ICFTandem Coaching

  4. Be honest about your credentials and your limits. If coaching isn’t the right fit—for you or your client be real and hand ’em off. ICFTandem Coaching

  5. Keep your claims legit, no glitter and rainbows unless you mean it. Tandem Coaching ICF

4. Own the Integrity: The Pledge

You don’t just sign up for ethics, you live them. ICF coaches pledge to:

  • Uphold the Code consistently.

  • Be accountable—violations can get your credential shelved, or worse.
There’s an ethical review process (ECR), so no dodging it. ICF+1

Ethical Standards & ICF Alignment

As an ICF-aligned coach, I’m committed to the ICF’s 2025 Code of Ethics, grounded in Professionalism, Collaboration, Humanity, and Equity.

I will:
• Provide an explicit coaching agreement up front (scope, roles, confidentiality, fees, cancellation, etc.).
• Keep all client information confidential unless the law requires otherwise.
• Be transparent about any conflicts of interest.
• Be upfront about my expertise and limitations.
• Take responsibility for the quality and integrity of the coaching, aligned with the “Do Good” principle.

I pledge to uphold these commitments at all times and recognize that failure to do so may result in review under ICF’s Ethical Conduct Review process.
